SSP director needs Safe Mode DISABLED.
Run the Director Test on your server to make sure your environment works with SSP!
Sometimes SSP galleries won't show up in Safari on Mac, I found uncommenting define('DISABLE_CACHE', true); (line 107 of user_setup.php) magically fixed this.
